Asian vs western values
Five years in Thailand taught more than how to spot chicks with dicks, or to recognise what foods would pleasantly burn my face off. Below are some of the more interesting values I found that were distinctly different between East to West and notes on how they effect decisions. In the West, independence is valued above family. Our parents want us to grow into strong adults who can take care of ourselves and in turn they will get their own independence back when we leave the house. A Thai family will want to keep their children tucked under their wing and support them and if children get a well paid job parents will feel no shame in asking the children for part of that income.

Asian values was a political ideology of the s, which defined elements of society, culture and history common to the nations of Southeast and East Asia. It aimed to use commonalities — for example, the principle of collectivism — to unify people for their economic and social good and to create a pan-Asian identity. This contrasted with perceived European ideals of the universal rights of man. The popularity of the concept waned after the Asian financial crisis , when it became evident that Asia lacked any coherent regional institutional mechanism to deal with the crisis. Various definitions of Asian values have been put forth. Generally, the phrase alludes to influences by Confucianism p10 — in particular, filial piety or loyalty towards the family, corporation, and nation; the forgoing of personal freedom for the sake of society's stability and prosperity; the pursuit of academic and technological excellence; and, a strong work ethic together with thrift. Proponents of so-called "Asian values", who tend to support Chinese-style authoritarian governments, p13 claim these values are more appropriate for the region than Western democracy with its emphasis on individual freedoms.

One of the major differences between China and the West is the importance which the family — with its hierarchical structure and its complex web of social roles, regulations, duties, and moral values — has in Chinese society see: Filial Piety in Chinese Culture. Despite major social and economic changes, the Chinese-speaking world has retained some of the core elements of the traditional Confucian family. This is also demonstrated by the fact that the legal system of countries in the Chinese-speaking world has been heavily influenced by Confucian values. The Confucian worldview is based on the idea that human relationships are functional and hierarchical.
Asian values , set of values promoted since the late 20th century by some Asian political leaders and intellectuals as a conscious alternative to Western political values such as human rights , democracy , and capitalism. Advocates of Asian values typically claimed that the rapid development of many East Asian economies in the post-World War II period was due to the shared culture of their societies, especially those of Confucian heritage. They also asserted that Western political values were unsuited to East Asia because they fostered excessive individualism and legalism, which threatened to undermine the social order and destroy economic dynamism. Among Asian values that were frequently cited were discipline , hard work, frugality, educational achievement, balancing individual and societal needs, and deference to authority.
